Davis that focuses on two very different women, brought together to serve the community at the local food pantry. Angela, a wealthy Princeton housewife, and Sister Eileen, a nun from the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who runs the pantry, cross paths and affect each other's lives in transforming and surprising ways. With a diverse cast of characters that range from Philip, Angela's entitled yet well meaning husband, to Sister Eileen's spiritual director who helps Eileen through her darkest hours through insightful spiritual guidance and enables her to help others, themes of loving difficult people, accepting and adhering to one's own path, how seemingly small decisions can effect others in untold and dramatic ways, and the myriad invisible ways we are all connected to even those living very different lives are woven into a compelling and propulsive read. My favorite parts of the book are from Sister Eileen's point of view, as I am an admirer of the Sisters of St. Joseph and all they do for those they serve. Eileen comes across as a very real, thoughtful, intelligent character who thinks deeply about spirituality and her role in the world as serving others to make it a better place, which is not easy work. While the character of Angela is not as easy to like and accompanying her on her journey was at times frustrating, she was well-drawn and her story provides the engine for the book, which in the latter half I simply couldn't put down. Davis in her newest novel “Even So” tackles the complications of these desires. The story is told through the points of view of two narrators: Angela, a privileged upper-class woman living in Princeton, NJ and Sister Eileen, a nun at work in a food panty based in Trenton, NJ. Angela is not a likable character but it is not difficult to feel empathy for her as she struggles with the consequences for her decisions. Sister Eileen is flawed but this makes her much more realistic and easy to like. The storyline is engaging and moves at a steady pace. With unpredictable twists, Lauren B. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Tina Loves to Read -- General Fiction : This is a General Fiction. This book is told by two women that are living two way different lives. The first point of view this book is told in is Angela who is married to a well off man and is a stay at home wife. The second point of view this book is told in is Sister Eileen, and she runs Daily Bread Food Pantry. I think this book covers so many topics that is hard hitting and hard to read at times. I do think this author cover these topics so very well. I did feel that the beginning of this book was slow moving and at times boring. It took me a bit to get pulled into this book, but once I was pulled in I did not want to put it down. I loved that this book made me think about things, and It always made me feel from these characters even when I really did not like the things they had done. The characters in this book is not lovable, but they are not written to be lovable. I do feel that the characters are well developed. This book with touch you in so many different ways. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ania Szpakowski -- Hooks you from the first page : Amazing story. From the first page, you are hooked. You get very attached to the characters and get mad at them when you know what they are doing will get them in trouble. I remember thinking, 'don't do it, don't do it ..... and she did it...Ouf! I love intense characters and the main character is very intense, so relatable.... This and 'The Empty Room', also by the same author, are my all-time favourite books. Make sure you have enough time set aside to read the book as you will not want to put it down.... ( Reviewed in Canada on September 22, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from drj218 -- Even So is the best book I've read in years : Even So captured my full attention from the first pages, through many twist and turns, and right through to the terrific ending. The two main characters in this novel are really well developed and despite some of their flaws, they came across authentically and I loved them. As we follow their journeys and the fascinating ways the author had their paths intersect, it made me think about some of the "us vs them" issues we face in our day to day lives. The reality is we all have more in common than we may recognize. Really excellent book which I'm enthusiastically recommending to my book club. ( Reviewed in Canada on September 24, 2021 )
